Common water heater failures
Water heaters is a common type of climate technology, which provide comfort in apartments and private homes. As any other devices, from time to time they need maintenance and repair due to wear and failure of some parts and assemblies. Despite the large number of different modifications of boilers, they all have approximately the same design features. That’s why it’s not that difficult to remove the problem. Let’s have a look at the main problems and their causes.
Depressurization and discharge of fluid
In the presence of leaks and discharge of fluid may be needed urgent repair of the device. The causes of problems are as follows:
Incorrect installation of the boiler, made by an inexperienced technician. The leaks appear in the plugs, the connections of the pipes, from under the cover;
Late or bad-quality service. The main condition for use of water heaters is the timely replacement of the anode used to slow down the formation of scale on the heating element (applies to both “wet” and “dry heating elements”). The anode should be replaced once a year if the heater is in direct contact with the liquid, and every 2 years if the heater is placed in a protective housing. If inside there is a thick layer of scale, the device can discharge water;
Corrosion of the weld seam body, resulting in fluid leakage. The resource of average tank models is 10 years. However, in most cases upon expiration of the required replacement of the tank, it is better to purchase a new boiler.
Incorrect operation of the pressure relief valve.
The leakage, caused by corrosion processes, occurring inside the case, is initially almost imperceptible. To solve the problem, you should call specialists. It is recommended to switch off the boiler so that the ingress of liquid onto the elements of the power supply network will not lead to a short circuit.
The device does not turn on
Modern devices have high degree of electrical protection, but in case of incorrect use can appear brakeage. There are two main reasons for it:
Lack of power due to damage of the electrical cable, blown fuse. It is better to call at once to experienced specialists;
Failure of the heater. Most often, a “dry” type heater burns directly in contact with the liquid. Covered with a thick layer of scale element can perform heating much longer, then stated by the manufacturer.
Insufficient pressure in the supply pipe, sensor failure. If there is an insufficient amount of liquid entering the tank, the device will not produce heat for safety reasons.
Failure of the temperature sensor.
Cold water does not enter the boiler
There are a lot of reasons why liquid is not getting inside the tank:
The banal reason that arises in emergency situations is the lack of water supply in a centralized system. The uses can’t solve it himself;
Clogged pipelines or filter element. It may be necessary to replace the pipe section, removable filter cassette;
Incorrect setting of the pressure reducer or its failure;
A thick layer of scale formed on the inner walls of the tank, the anode or the heating element.
Insufficient heating fluid
This is quite common problem, accompanied by other: the change in color and smell of heated water, the presence of extraneous sounds when the boiler is in operation. Incomplete heating over a specified period of time may occur for the following reasons:
Failure of one of the heaters in models containing several elements;
The formation of a thick layer of scale on the walls of the hull, the anode or the heating element itself;
Depressurization of the shut-off valve, resulting in heated water enters the common pipeline;
Incorrect operation of the thermostat. In some models, the temperature adjustment mechanism is hidden behind the housing cover. Changes to the mode of operation of the boiler can be done only with the removal of the cover;
Thermostat failure. Usually is required the replacement of this node.
Fast cooling fluid
Tank devices are capable of maintaining the required temperature of the liquid in the tank for a long time, which is the reason for their energy efficiency (unlike tankless models). But in some cases, the liquid can cool much faster. This happens for the following reasons:
Incorrect installation of inlet and outlet connections. The problem is typical for universal models that can be installed both vertically and horizontally;
Network pressure is too high;
The absence or failure of the locking elements, and therefore the heated fluid enters the main pipeline;
Violation of the insulating layer, which covers the tank body.
Noise at work
In work of heaters, the layers of warm and cold liquid are mixed inside the tank. This physical process is called convective heat transfer. For it is typical characteristic noise, such as from heating of water in an electric kettle. So, mostly it doesn’t desturb anybody. But also there are cases, which may need more precise attention.
Sometimes the boiler is too noisy. The reason for this may be as follows:
Increased pressure of fluid in the tank. To solve the problem is recommended to install pressure reducer;
Depressurization of check or bypass valves;
Cracks on the case of “dry” heating elements;
The formation of scale on the heating element;
Air entering with liquid.
As it can be seen from everything, that was said above, the operational resource of the heater depends on many factors, but the main ones are compliance with the operating conditions of this device and timely service. In case of any problem it’s highly recommended or use the professional help, because this is the way not to make the problem even worse.
